Some Like It Hot - Recipe Series Part 2

Yaupon - Medium Roast

When we told you Yaupon is both delicious and versatile, we weren’t exaggerating. To prove it to you, we’re bringing you six recipes that are sure to excite your senses and inspire you to incorporate more wildcrafted ingredients into your caffeinated daily rituals. Our loose-leaf tea is compatible with french presses, tea strainers, coffee makers, and even your reusable Keurig cup (about 1.5tsp per serving). While it’s delicious on its own, it combines nicely with your wild foraged or cultivated plants, as well as with other Surthrival products!

MEDIUM ROAST YAUPON

If you've ever enjoyed Yerba Mate—Yaupon's South American sister—our medium roast has a very similar flavor profile. Here are some ways to enjoy it warm and frothy, or cold and fermented!

“Yaupon a la Daniel”

This rich and creamy recipe is how our own Daniel Vitalis enjoys his morning Yaupon. If you like to start your morning getting buttered-up with your coffee, try this!

  1. Brew 2.5tsp medium roast Yaupon (for a strong full-bodied brew) with hot water.
  2. Add a spoonful of Surthrival ghee, a scoop of bone broth protein (Pure or Vanilla), a small knob of ginger, and your favorite natural sweetener to taste.
  3. Blend until it's so thick and frothy you just can’t stand the wait. (It’s also great with a cinnamon stick stirrer)

“Holly Hooch”

Yaupon offers up sustainable and wildcrafted opportunities for the kombucha crowd, too! In keeping with our Yaupon’s central-Texan origin, this kombucha is infused with a wild ecological buddy: prickly pear cactus fruit. We encourage you to infuse your Yaupon kombucha with fruits from your local landscape, too.

  1. Brew medium roast Yaupon using your preferred ratio of tea to sugar or sweetener for kombucha (1 gallon of tea : 1 cup of sugar is pretty standard). Allow tea to cool completely.
  2. Add scoby and starter tea to cooled Yaupon tea. Cover with a breathable cloth or your preferred fermentation lid and place out of direct sunlight. Allow to ferment for 7-14 days.
  3. Transfer tea to a jar or multiple jars with your preferred fruits or herbs, leaving an inch or so of empty space at the top before sealing tightly with lids. Let sit at room temperature for another 2-10 days.
  4. Strain the solids and enjoy!
